Top Gun, Black Panther and Avatar shortlisted for Oscars

Blockbuster movies like Top Gun: Maverick, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and Avatar: The Way Of Water and pop stars like Lady Gaga, Taylor Swift and Rihanna have come one step closer to receiving Oscar nominations. .

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences on Wednesday announced the shortlist in 10 categories for the 95th Academy Awards, including documentaries, international films, makeup and hairdressing, scores, Original songs, sounds, visual effects and shorts.

The inclusion of Joyland marks the first time Pakistan has been shortlisted. Most of the directors were shortlisted for the first time, with the exception of Inarritu.

India’s official submission is not SS Rajamouli’s hit action epic RRR, but Pan Nalin’s Last Screening which has been cut, becoming the country’s first film to do so in more than 20 years.

RRR could receive nominations in other categories, including shortlisted original song Naatu Naatu.

Jafar Panahi was also not nominated to represent Iran, which was not selected from among 15 and Russia did not submit a film this year.

Documentaries moving to the next stage of voting include Laura Poitras’ Venice award-winning All The Beauty And The Bloodshed, about photographer Nan Goldin’s work and activism, and Brett Morgen’s David Bowie’s Moonage Daydream , Navalny by Daniel Roher, about Russian opposition leader, The Janes about activists before Roe v Wade, All that Breathes, Descendant, Fire Of Love and Hallelujah: Leonard Cohen, A Journey, A Song.

It’s a pretty diverse group of stories and filmmakers. Eight are directed by women and four are directed by people of color.

Big-budget sequels like Avatar, Top Gun and Black Panther performed well in the sound and effects categories, as did original songs including Gaga’s Hold My Hand, The Weeknd’s Nothing Is Lost in the series. Rihanna’s Avatar and Lift Me Up in Black Panther.
