Top Gun: Maverick teased in trailer starring Tom Cruise

The cast of Top Gun Maverick was abandoned on set as they tried to battle the G-Force effects in the scenes where they were flying a fighter jet.

The sequel to the 1986 action classic finally hits theaters this month and sees Tom Cruise return as Pete ‘Maverick’ Mitchell and train the next generation of fighter pilots.

While 59-year-old Tom is a professional action hero, his younger co-stars found themselves struggling with the grueling effects of filming inside a supersonic jet.

Among the cast is 33-year-old Scream Queens star Glen Powell, who has confessed that he and his younger co-stars lost lunch while filming the scenes.

Tom, who is both the film’s producer and the star, insists the cast received fighter pilot training for the film and that they were taught how to edit footage shot in their cockpit to create produce realistic footage of them flying through the air.

Glen, who plays lieutenant Jake ‘Hangman’ Seresin, a trainee fighter pilot, told The Sun on Sunday: “There was a lot of hangover during filming.

“Before shooting, Tom sent us three months of training to get used to the g-forces. [But] even with training, nothing prepares you for the intensity of flying on the F-18.

“We all fly once a day and Tom is up there three times a day. But it didn’t upset him at all.

“Here we are, all sick in the pocket, and he’s getting everything in his way. The guy is a machine”.

Meanwhile, Tom banned the actors from drinking while they were filming the long-awaited sequel because he wanted them all to stay in top physical shape.

Co-star Miles Teller, 35 – who played Lieutenant Bradley ‘Rooster’ Bradshaw, son of Nick ‘Goose’ Bradshaw in the original – told the Mirror: “There are days after a tough shoot, I can actually use a couple of beers… but you just don’t want to fly at that breakneck speed.”

A source added, “On most sets, the cast and crew socialize and go out drinking, but on Top Gun, they’re required to keep partying to a minimum.”

Miles went on to admit that he made an exception for a wedding, adding: “The next day, I had a training flight at 100C. It’s brutal. ”

Meanwhile, film director Joseph Kosinski has explained why he decided not to invite Kelly McGillis back to the sequel after she played Charlotte ‘Charlie’ Blackwood in the original.

The director said he didn’t want to include Maverick’s original love interest, explaining: “Those aren’t stories that we’re throwing around.”

The boss of Top Gun explains that he has noted that both Iceman and Goose’s stories will be continued in Maverick – so he doesn’t want more stories floating around.

He added: “I don’t want every storyline to always look backwards. It’s important to introduce some new characters.”

Meg Ryan was also turned down for a sequel after she played Goose’s love interest, who was played by ER star Anthony Edwards.
