The first verdicts on the long-awaited Top Gun sequel Top Gun: Maverick are in – and fans have reason to be happy.

he upcoming thriller, in which Tom Cruise reprises the role of ace fighter pilot Pete “Maverick” Mitchell, has been heralded by critics as an improvement over the 1986 original.

In addition to Cruise, Miles Teller, Jon Hamm, Jennifer Connelly, Glen Powell, Ed Harris and Val Kilmer also star.

In a four-star review for The Independent, Clarisse Loughrey writes, “Top Gun: Maverick really isn’t packed with the cowardly nostalgia we’re used to these days. It’s smarter, more subtle, and more humanistic altogether.”

While praising the film’s technical ambition and action sequences, she criticizes the original’s treatment of female characters, writing, “Neither McGillis nor Meg Ryan, who played Rooster’s mother, are making any return. Maverick instead gets a new love interest in the form of Jennifer Connelly’s Penny, the admiral’s daughter, who was mentioned in passing in the first film and is now a bar owner and single mother.

“There will come a time when we need to talk about why Hollywood only accepts older women with certain looks. Until then, who can you blame for getting carried away by a movie that’s so damn funny?”

The Telegraph’s Robbie Collin was even more effusive in his praise of the film, giving Maverick five stars.

“[Maverick] Dad Cinema is at its tongue-in-cheek peak,” he wrote, “all gruff wistfulness and raw camaraderie interspersed with flight sequences so absurdly exciting and immersive they seem to reverse cinema 180 degrees.”

Describing Cruise as “incredibly charismatic,” Sky News’ Claire Gregory added, “This is Tom Cruise at his Megawatt A-Lister best, reminding us all why he’s one of the biggest movie stars on earth – it’s hard to.” believe he was filming back in the fifties.”

In a four-star review for The Times, Kevin Maher wrote: “Of course nobody goes to a Top Gun movie for tears – although you should bring your handkerchief – and the spectacle here has certainly gone stratospheric.

“With cameras in cockpits and strapped to wings and nose cones, Kosinski has delivered a dizzying, heart-pounding movie monster. See it on the biggest screen possible. Then watch it again.”

The Guardian’s Peter Bradshaw was less enthusiastic and gave the film three stars. He wrote: “There’s a lot of rock ‘n’ roll fighter pilot action in this film, but oddly none of the homoerotic tension that had boys queuing at the Navy recruiting booths in the theater foyers back then.

“What’s even weirder is that it’s actually less progressive in terms of gender issues than the original film, which at least put a woman at the helm.

“Cruise’s movie star skills are still wonderful though, and he has a really touching dialogue scene with Kilmer,” he added.

Top Gun: Maverick hits theaters May 27th.
