Shares in Ireland’s largest companies tumbled along with global stock markets on Thursday after optimism that the Federal Reserve would be able to tame inflation without plunging the US into recession faded.

In the US, the Nasdaq index of mostly tech-related stocks suffered its biggest decline since the early days of the Covid pandemic, falling 5 percent. In Ireland, the Iseq index of leading stocks fell 1.73 percent – enough to offset billions from the combined valuations of the likes of CRH (down 1.20 percent), Flutter (down 3.52 percent), Ryanair (down 2.30 percent) and wiping out Kingspan (down 2.80 percent).
