Top Republican Kevin McCarthy has been branded a “liar and a traitor” by Democrat Elizabeth Warren for denying the Trump dispute

A leading Democrat has launched a scathing attack on top Republican Kevin McCarthy, calling him a “liar and a traitor” over records showing the House Republican leader bears the blame donald trump for the riot in the Capitol in 2021.

Senator Elizabeth Warren’s comments are unusually strong words against the Republican leader, who is in line to become speaker — second in the line of presidential succession — if Republicans win control of the House in November’s election.

But Ms Warren’s testimony reflects a wave of Democrat criticism of Mr McCarthy.

They cite his recorded comments in January 2021 as evidence that Republican lawmakers at the highest levels privately acknowledge Mr. Trump’s role in the Capitol riot but continue to publicly defend him.

Mr McCarthy denied a New York Times reported last week that detailed phone calls with the Republican leadership of the House of Representatives shortly after the riot that he thought Trump should resign. He called it “completely wrong”.

But in audio released by the newspaper, Mr McCarthy can be clearly heard discussing the possibility of pressing Trump to leave office.

“Kevin McCarthy is a liar and a traitor,” Ms Warren told CNN yesterday.

“That’s really the sickness that’s permeating Republican leadership right now, that they say one thing to the American public and something else in private,” she said.

“They understand that what happened is wrong, an attempt to overthrow our government, and that instead Republicans want to keep trying to figure out how to do the 2020 election differently, rather than pouring their energies into it like we do.” moving forward building an economy to make this country work better for the people who sent us to Washington.”

“Shame on Kevin McCarthy,” she said.

The crowd attacking the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, marched there from a rally near the White House, where Mr. Trump had implored them to fight to overthrow Democrat Joe Biden’s presidential election victory, he said mistakenly that the election had been stolen.

Mr Trump has denied responsibility for the violence.

Mr. McCarthy was an interesting figure for the House Committee investigating the Capitol Riot. The committee asked him for an interview in mid-January.

He said he would refuse to cooperate because he saw the investigation as illegitimate.
