Professor Lord Martin Rees, who is an Astronomer Royal, says the idea of shipping loads from us to a distant planet is a “dangerous delusion”.

But he said we should cheer on rich private space explorers like Musk who want to take the plunge.

“In dealing with climate change and other environmental issues, Earth is really a no-brainer compared to getting Mars terraformed and habitable,” Lord Rees told The Sun.

“We believe that later in this century there will be some crazy adventurers who will go to Mars to build a small colony and maybe some will go with one-way trips.

“We should cheer for something like that, but it’s an adventure, just like we can admire people doing other crazy stunts and we can admire them, but that should be the future of space exploration.”

In a new book by Lord Rees and Donald Goldsmith, the couple’s main argument against human spaceflight is the cost to taxpayers.

They believe it should be left to the billionaires because of the huge cost.

Instead, we should aim to send more robots because it costs significantly less, is less risky and they don’t need a return flight to get home.

“Our point is that for most practical purposes of exploring and building things in space, as robots get better, the case for sending humans at far greater cost weakens,” Lord Rees said.

But he still believes human feet will eventually land on Mars.

“I don’t know how quickly that’s going to happen, so I wouldn’t be at all surprised if there were a few intrepid adventurers living on Mars before the end of the century,” he added.

The End of Astronauts: Why Robots Are the Future of Exploration is out now.
