DETAILS about Apple’s upcoming virtual reality headset have been revealed by a top insider.
Industry experts say that the space-age glasses will launch later this year – in time for Christmas.
Apple has long been rumored to have a headset in development.
It is expected to provide virtual reality (take you into the virtual world) and augmented reality (overlaying computer images onto the real world).
Opponents attacked first with similar glasses.
Google Glass has been around for years, while Facebook has been widely praised for its Oculus Quest 2 headphone.
Microsoft has also pushed ahead with its HoloLens augmented reality glasses, targeting businesses rather than consumers.
Sony just unveiled the PSVR 2 headset for its PS5, and HTC offers the powerful Vive suite.
Now, Apple is set to enter the fray with a headset later this year.
According to Ming-Chi Kuo, a top Apple insider, the headphones will launch in 2022.
But the stock will “go up” in the first part of 2023, according to an investor note seen by MacRumors.
TF International Securities analyst says that the headset will have two “pancake 3P lenses”.
They are said to have a folding design so that light is reflected between the screen and the lens.
According to Kuo, this will allow for a smaller and lighter headset.
So how much will it cost?
Kuo didn’t say in his new note, but previous estimates have marked the headset as retailing for thousands of dollars.
That would be much more than the cost of something like the Oculus Quest 2 $299 / £299.
It’s likely to cost about the same as the HTC Vive and a high-powered gaming PC to power it.
What’s also unclear is whether Apple’s headphones will contain its own computing power – or rely on another device.
If it costs thousands of dollars, the computation will almost certainly be done on the device.
However, it’s possible that some tasks may require an iPhone – as is the case with other Apple accessories.
Sadly, Apple has yet to confirm any such devices, so don’t hold your breath.
