Top Swiss Vaccination Advisor Says He Was Kidnapped – POLITICO

The head of the Swiss Vaccination Center has said he was briefly kidnapped in late March in a mysterious incident that ended days later in the death of his alleged kidnapper.

Christoph Berger, president of the country’s vaccination committee and leading spokesman for measures to combat the coronavirus pandemic, confirmed in a statement to local media that he had been briefly held hostage on March 31 by an unknown man.

“The kidnapper had me in his power for a good hour. During that time, he confronted me with a substantial monetary claim,” Berger said in the statement The New Zurich Times and other media.

Berger’s testimony indicated that the kidnapper’s motive was financial and unrelated to his job. “The perpetrator made no reference to my role as chair of the vaccination committee,” Berger said, adding that he was released after assuring that the kidnapper’s demands would be met.

After the incident, police tried to arrest the suspect, a 38-year-old German businessman, in Zurich last Wednesday. According to local reports, a shootout ensued in which the man killed a staff member before being shot dead by police himself. Top Swiss Vaccination Advisor Says He Was Kidnapped - POLITICO
