The UK is embracing a newfound zest for life – taking up a host of new hobbies including surfing, writing a book and flying a plane.

A survey of 2,000 adults found that over two-thirds (68%) feel more driven than ever to embrace life and step out of their comfort zone to try new things.

Top 20 ambitions include skydiving, driving on a racetrack and conquering a mountain range.

Becoming fluent in a new language, overcoming a fear and finally learning an instrument they’ve always wanted to play was also a priority.

The study also revealed a shift in perspective, with half of those surveyed saying they are now more focused on short-term achievable goals that can bring instant joy, rather than longer-term lifetime ambitions.

The study was commissioned by bmw to promote the launch of its new 2 Series Active Tourer.

A spokesperson for the brand said: “Staying physically and mentally active is vital to our happiness and well-being.

“That’s why it’s great to know that many people follow their ambitions and go in search of new experiences.”

As many as four in ten respondents share this belief, saying that ambition in life is key to managing both physical and mental well-being.

And more than a third (37%) say they never stop learning if they always aim for something.

It also found that aging doesn’t slow us down, it only speeds up that drive – with more than half of the nation (52%) saying getting older has given them perspective and made them more determined to achieve their goals.

Despite these good intentions, however, some of us are hesitating – according to OnePoll.com figures, 45% are standing at the end of the weekend fearing they “wasted” it and should have done more.

The BMW spokesman adds: “We all know the feeling that the days and weeks seem to go by faster with age.

“Now is the time to get out there, seize the day, get in the car and try what you’ve always wanted to try.”

BMW has developed an Active Tourer Map to help the nation discover the UK’s top 20 wellness and daredevil experiences.
