Northern Ireland’s Brexit bill, presented tomorrow, is a desperate attempt to divert public attention, writes Shadow Cabinet Minister Baroness Jenny Chapman

Boris Johnson tries to salvage his ailing leadership by breaking the emergency glass that reads ‘Brexit Row’.
The government’s new Northern Ireland law is a desperate attempt to divert the attention of a disappointed and battered public from its chaotic Tory leadership.
With the introduction of a bill to unilaterally break up the Northern Ireland Protocol, the government relieves the EU.
We all know the Prime Minister isn’t thinking about what he’s going to do tomorrow, so it’s no wonder there are problems with the deal he brokered two years ago.
It doesn’t have to be like this. What we need is sober negotiation and focus.
The UK does not have to rejoin the customs union or the single market.
Rather than looking back, we need to hear what businesses in Northern Ireland who have joined forces to find solutions are saying today.
They told the House of Lords last week they want simpler rules and arrangements to abolish checks – like the veterinary control Labor Party has been calling for.
They want efficiency, certainty, simplicity and pragmatism so they can trade and help revitalize our weary economy.
The truth is the Tories are intentionally making things worse because Boris Johnson needs the drama. Labor would make Brexit work.
A Labor government would buy Britons, not for their own sake, but because they are the best. Investing in the skills and jobs of the future to build an economy that works for all, especially in the regions with the greatest untapped potential.
The Tories don’t give a damn that Brits are struggling to pay their bills, get passports or fill their cars with petrol. They think a fight with the EU would pay off politically, but the truth is they have run out of a way to Brexit.
It is time to fix the problems with the deal once and for all so the government can deal with the real and immediate crisis facing millions of British families.
