That’s more than one reason the Tories have done so little to help families with the cost of living.
They’re not just incompetent.
You also have no idea how tough life is for so many households.
The party’s stance was summed up by Conservative MP Lee Anderson, who maintained that there wasn’t much need for food banks and that people were only going hungry because they hadn’t learned to cook properly.
It’s probably pointless to explain to someone as stupid as Mr. Anderson that people turn to food banks when rising prices mean they can’t afford basic groceries.
Nor is there any point in explaining that people have less money because his government has cut pensions and benefits while raising taxes.
His perfunctory comments show that the Tories would rather blame others than take responsibility for the crisis unfolding under their watch.
Mr. Anderson is not a lone voice in the party.
He shares a mindset with Chancellor Rishi Sunak, who did not act in his spring statement, and Prime Minister Boris Johnson, whose Queen’s Speech program was unimaginative on how to ease the financial squeeze.

Boris Johnson hailed the Northern Ireland Protocol as a “great deal” when he signed it.
But now the prime minister is threatening to tear up parts of it in protest at the bureaucratic burden he has imposed on the trade. Far from delivering on his promise to complete Brexit, he is ready to provoke another fight with Brussels – to right a mistake he made himself.
The government needs to back down on the rhetoric and work with the European Union to find a way to make the protocol work.

Prince William today whisked Kate away from attending school before she had a chance to brood.
The prospect of a fourth child had obviously thrown him off balance.
