“Tories have not tried to prevent a rail strike as they want to ignite political divisions” – Voice of the Mirror

A responsible government would have stepped in to try to settle the dispute and prevent the disruption. Unions have been repeatedly rebuffed by Transport Secretary Grant Shapps

Next week the country is threatened with standstill because of the planned rail strike.
Industrial action is always a last resort. But RMT union members argue that if they want to avoid more than 2,000 of their colleagues being laid off and secure an inflation-matched pay rise, they have no choice but to do so.
While some railway workers make decent wages, many make less than £20,000 a year.
They fight not out of greed, but because what’s on the table doesn’t account for rising food, heating, and heating costs.
A responsible government would have stepped in to try to settle the dispute and prevent the disruption. Although the unions sought talks, they were repeatedly rebuffed by Transport Secretary Grant Shapps.
The Tories are far more interested in fueling divisions for political ends than in brokering a deal that’s good for both workers and passengers.
There is still time to avert the march. It just requires Mr Shapps to stop being great and start talking.

Inject the money
As Britain smolders during the first heatwave of the year, local councils are closing swimming pools.
City halls are not doing this out of defiance, but because of rising chlorine prices. The war in Ukraine combined with a drop in production in China has pushed up prices by as much as 60%.
Even if cash-strapped city councilors are short on cash, they should do whatever it takes to keep the pools open.
It’s not just about letting people cool off. Activities like swimming are good for people’s physical and mental health.
