“Tories should ban fires and reinstatements after P&O Ferries lays off 800 staff” – Voice of the Mirror

If Conservatives really want to show solidarity with 800 P&O workers who have lost their jobs – and want to end bad business practices – they should ban layoffs and hiring

The owners of P&O Ferries have tarnished the name of a once great shipping company.

Laying off 800 employees and replacing them with contract workers who are reportedly being paid below minimum wage is beyond contempt.

It’s hard to imagine a worse example of corporate greed and mismanagement.

The Transport Secretary has now ordered a review of the government’s contracts with P&O and its parent company DP World.

This welcome step is far from enough. If the Conservatives really want to show solidarity with the 800 unemployed – and put an end to bad business practices – they should ban layoffs and hiring.

You should also review their partnerships with DP World in the Solent and Thames Gateway free ports.

There has been no shortage of Tory MPs to denounce DP World’s disgraceful conduct, but until they act to give workers the rights they deserve, words mean nothing.

It’s not trivial

According to Jacob Rees-Mogg, parties at Downing Street during lockdown were “trivial fluff”.

The Cabinet Secretary clearly has no sympathy for the public anger at the behavior of Boris Johnson and his No 10 colleagues.

As the Prime Minister celebrated, people across the country scrupulously abided by the rules, even if it meant not being able to attend funerals or visit loved ones.

The fact that the people who made these rules didn’t follow them is not trivial.

Nor should the fact that the Prime Minister may have misled Parliament be dismissed as ‘fuzz’.

The thousands who have been fined for breaking lockdown rules would not expect to get away with such an excuse. Neither does Rees Mogg.
