Tory politician believes Sinn Féin could be implicated in the English city’s ‘green mailbox mystery’

A councilman has claimed that Sinn Féin was involved in painting several letterboxes green in an English town.

Many red letterboxes in Huddersfield have been painted green in recent weeks, much to the dismay of local residents, the police and the Royal Mail.

West Yorkshire Police have launched an investigation into the spate of paintings, at the behest of Royal Mail, which reported the matter, as letterboxes began turning from red to green.

Conservative councilor Bernard McGuin, himself a former postman of Irish descent, believes he is on the verge of solving the mystery.

“I’m amazed at what has happened, but it seems someone connected to Sinn Féin may be involved,” he told Yorkshire Live.

“Local residents consider what was done to be vandalism.

“Hopefully the boxes will be red again of tradition. I hope we have a reply from Royal Mail on what is going on. As a dour Yorkshire Conservative, I miss the reds,” said Bernard.

Local Greens officials were initially accused that local elections had just taken place, but a party spokesman strongly denied any connection to the killings.

Many eagle-eyed Irish observers claimed it couldn’t have been Sinn Féin as “the shade of green is a bit off”.

A Royal Mail spokesman said they “do not know who repainted these mailboxes and are reporting this matter to the police. We will repaint the boxes in the iconic red as soon as possible.”

Locals have not taken the vandalism well, as red post boxes are considered a traditional symbol of British culture and have expressed dissatisfaction.

Margaret Hardy, 79, who has lived in the suburb of Edgerton for more than 40 years, told Yorkshire Live: “Edgerton is a conservative area so we take any kind of ‘traditional baiting’ very seriously here. I just hope the police are doing their best to find the culprit.” has contacted Sinn Féin for comment.
