The leader of the Conservative Party’s 1922 Committee is reportedly expected to announce a vote of no confidence in Boris Johnson today.

Tory rebels expect Graham Brady to make the Prime Minister’s announcement this morning, ITV reports.

Sir Graham will make a brief statement before the cameras and a secret vote by Tory MPs would follow within days if the format follows previous such cases.

Tory rebels believe 54 letters – the number needed to trigger a vote of no confidence – have already been reached and will be announced on Monday morning.

Mr Johnson’s leadership has taken a hit over the Partygate scandal, which saw him handed only one penalty by Scotland Yard for illegal gatherings during the coronavirus lockdown.

Mr Johnson said he was “humbled” by the results but tried to pin the blame on staff, claiming he was unaware of how loud some events were getting.

It initially appeared that Tories were buying into his defence, but a number of MPs have now broken cover to call for the Prime Minister’s resignation.

Sentiment darkened ahead of the anniversary weekend with widespread speculation in Westminster that rebels had the numbers to trigger a vote in Mr Johnson’s leadership.
