Tottenham news: Antonio Conte denies PSG rumors as replacement shortlist ‘created’

Tottenham Hotspur boss Antonio Conte has been heavily linked with a move to replace ex-Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino at Paris Saint-Germain.

Despite the strong links between Conte and a move to France, the Spurs boss has denied the reports, while new claims elsewhere suggest that should Conte leave for Paris, a shortlist of three has already been drawn up for his successor, which includes Pochettino The other two suggested that the contenders are well known to supporters of the First League.

Conte’s ties to PSG ‘fake news’

Tottenham boss Antonio Conte was quick to deny ties that would move to PSG if they opt to sack former Spurs boss Pochettino. Reports suggested that while Zinedine Zidane had been scouted as PSG’s first-choice option, Conte had offered himself in a deal worth over £25m-a-year.

However, Conte, who only joined Spurs in November, was very quick to dismiss the rumors, branding them “fake news”. “Of course I think it’s good that other clubs appreciate my work, but that’s one thing,” said Conte. The truth is I don’t like it when people try to make up news just to talk, just to create problems. It’s not right, it’s not fair to the clubs involved or my players, also because I feel like we’re really focusing on those five games and getting a result.

“This kind of situation makes me smile, but I think even the people who want to talk about it have to show respect for all the people involved in the situation and not make up fake news and tell a lot of lies.”

Mancini and Potter on Spurs’ ‘wish list’

While Conte has denied these rumours, it has been reported that should he leave, a three-man shortlist has already been made with Pochettino to look for a potential replacement if needed.

The Telegraph has reported that if Conte were to leave north London, Pochettino, Italy boss Roberto Mancini and Brighton and Hove Albion manager Graham Potter would be the front-runners to replace Conte in charge of Spurs.

The report also suggests his current deal would include a compensation fee of around £15million should Conte leave, leaving Spurs in a favorable position to appoint a replacement.

Conte highlights Tottenham’s changed fortunes

Talks about Conte’s future aside, the Italian has highlighted how much better Tottenham have been doing since his arrival. After Nuno Espirito Santo was sacked in November, Spurs have rallied to launch an attack on the Premier League top four.

Conte, who was eighth, transformed the team over the winter and Tottenham now have their fate in their own hands going into the final five games of the season.

Speaking of Spurs’ turnaround, the 52-year-old told reporters: “First of all, I would like to stress that we are fighting for a goal that no one could have imagined at the beginning of the season.

“Especially in November because when I arrived the situation wasn’t good – otherwise you wouldn’t have changed coaches. So to arrive five games before the end and get that result is a great achievement for us.”
