It means the Gunners will only fall behind Spurs in this weekend’s games on goal difference and if they were to get a positive result Manchester United on Saturday they would jump Spurs ahead. Tottenham Then travel to an in-form Brentford team in the late game of the day.

Conte shares Eriksen’s joy

Ahead of Christian Eriksen’s meeting with his former club, Tottenham boss Antonio Conte has shared his delight at seeing the Danish playmaker back on the field.

Eriksen has excelled since he was signed by Brentford, although many wondered if his career would be over after suffering cardiac arrest at last summer’s Euro 2020. Conte and Eriksen worked together at Inter Milan for a while and the manager has paid tribute to his former player ahead of Saturday’s big game.

“It will be a pleasure to see him for a game,” he said of Eriksen. “It’s incredible because what happened happened not so long ago. Seeing him play again makes me very happy because I know football is life. To have this opportunity is great for him and his family , because now they have a normal life again.”

Ten Hag’s concern for Tottenham interview

Manchester United on Thursday confirmed the appointment of Erik ten Hag – a manager Tottenham are said to have considered in the past – as the club’s new manager.

The current Ajax manager has earned an excellent reputation for his work with the Dutch giants, as they have enjoyed success in the Champions League and play enterprising football. Spurs are said to have interviewed Ten Hag last summer before finally deciding on the appointment of Nuno Espirito Santo, with club decision-makers apparently puzzled that the Dutchman only wanted to bring one manager to north London.

It was also reported that Ten Hag’s understanding of the English language worried key figures at Spurs.

Conte expects an answer

With so much at stake for Spurs this weekend, Conte has made it clear he expects a response from his players after last week’s disappointment.

A top-four result is still in the hands of Tottenham despite the defeat at Brighton, although the Gunners could put some pressure on their rivals if they secured victory over United at midday on Saturday. Before the game, Conte tried to put Brighton’s setback into context but also made it clear what he expects from his team.

“Obviously our hope and desire is to play well and score goals in every game,” he said. “You know very well that not every game is easy and not every game is difficult. In every game you have to give 100 percent. I think during a season there can be situations like that.

“Don’t forget that Brighton won the last game against Arsenal and yesterday Manchester City struggled before the first goal. I think a draw was fairer but we have to learn that there are games where you can’t lose if you don’t win. At the end of the season, even one point might help you reach your goal.”
