Wolves a difficult opponent – Conte
Follow live updates as Tottenham host Wolves in the opening game of Premier League weekend. Antonio Conte’s side can go top of the table with a win after salvaging a late point in their fiery tie against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge last weekend and the Tottenham manager is expected to be on the touchline despite being after accused by the FA of his heated confrontation with Thomas Tuchel.
On the pitch, Spurs have been among the top scorers in the Premier League so far – although there are concerns at the other end as Cristian Romero has been ruled out with an adductor injury. Wolves, meanwhile, have been struggling for goals but have strengthened their midfield with the signing of Portugal international Matheus Nunes on a record deal with the club. Bruno Lage’s side won 2-0 on their last visit to Tottenham Hotspur but have gone without a win in their last nine games, dating back to last season.

However, Lage warned against expecting too much from the club’s latest signing too soon.
“He lives in a hotel, doesn’t have a car yet and has to learn to drive on the other side – but the most important thing for him is to be comfortable,” said the Wolves boss.
“We buy a player for the long term. We’re not pressuring – if he comes off the bench and plays 20 minutes I don’t want him to score three goals against Tottenham.
“What I want is for him to start developing confidence, knowing his teammates and playing like he did for Sporting.”

Bruno Lage on new signing Matheus Nunes:
“I don’t know if anyone else (from a Champions League club) tried to sign him.
“But it’s not just about the money and the club, it’s about the project you can offer him at that moment.
“What I do know is that when I start working with him, you see who he is.”

Wolves team news
No fooling around from Bruno Lage bringing new boys Matheus Nunes straight into the starting XI – it will be fascinating to see how he adapts, having joined for a hefty price tag and huge reputation just this week.
Fellow summer signature Goncalo Guedes starts in the forward line and João Moutinho also begins when Dendoncker and Hwang fall onto the bench. Morgan Gibbs-White is the other player to start against Fulham but he has now left the club and joined Forest.

Wolves’ Bruno Lage backs Matheus Nunes after joking Pep Guardiola added £10m to the fee
Wolves boss Bruno Lage is confident Matheus Nunes, the new record signing, can do justice to Pep Guardiola as one of the world’s best young talents – and jokes that such ringing endorsement could have cost the club an extra £10m.
Sporting Lisbon are understood to have initially paid €45m (£38m) for the 23-year-old, with a further €5m (£4.2m) in potential surcharges.
Nunes brings Champions League experience having been part of the Sporting side that were beaten by City last season.
After City’s 5-0 win in Lisbon, Guardiola described Nunes as “one of the best players in the world today”.
Lage thinks the praise is justified – even if it would have raised the young midfielder’s asking price.
“At that moment I was mad at Pep, because when Pep makes such a statement, the value of the player increases!” said the boss of the wolves.
“Now if I look for him I have to pay £10m more because if a manager like Pep says something about a player he pays £10m more (on the fee).”

Tottenham vs Wolves: early team news
Antonio Conte has confirmed that defender Cristian Romero will be unavailable due to an adductor injury. Romero has been key to Tottenham’s strong defensive record under Conte and Davinson Sanchez will be his likely replacement for the back three. Elsewhere, Ivan Perisic and Richarlison provided positive momentum from the bench at Stamford Bridge and the Croatian could get his first start on the left wing in place of Ryan Sessegnon on the left.
Wolves have announced their record signing in Matheus Nunes and the midfielder will make his first appearance with Spurs in Lage’s squad. Nelson Semedo and Adama Traore got their first minutes off the bench in the goalless draw with Fulham and could start here, while new signing Goncalo Guedes will be pushing for his debut. Raul Jimenez remains out with a knee injury so Hwang Hee-Chan will continue to lead the line.
