That traffic regulations states that motorists “must not park part or all of the pavement in London, nor should they do so anywhere else unless the signs allow it”.

The rules warn that pedestrians who are blind, have strollers or use wheelchairs could be penalized by cars on the sidewalk.

It adds that drivers “must not park their vehicle or trailer in a dangerous position that will unnecessarily obstruct the road”.

Police can issue fines if officers believe the car is in a dangerous position or causing unnecessary obstruction to the road.

The RAC has previously advised people to “use common sense when they have no choice but to park on the sidewalk”.
