Traffic at Plowing Championships: Long delays were reported as competitors were told to use Garda Directions ‘not Google Maps’

Long delays are being reported on various routes to the National Plowing Championships in Ratheniska, Co. Laois.

Traffic is heavy at the M7 junction at Portlaoise while there are also long delays on the R426 and R427 towards Ratheniska.

Heavy traffic was also reported on the R422 at Mountmellick, the N77 towards Abbeyleix and the N80 at Stadbally.

Meanwhile, traffic is beginning to ease at the M6 Tullamore junction following earlier delays.

Gardaí are asking participants in the Plowing Championships not to use Google Maps, but instead to follow their directions and local signage as 80,000 people are expected at the festival each day.

The national championships are back for the first time since the pandemic, taking place from September 20-22.

It is also the first time Ireland has hosted the World Plowing Championships as Russia was previously set to host the 2022 games.

Gardaí have urged participants in the three-day festival to follow their traffic management plan.

They’ve put together six different routes based on where the bettors are traveling from and these are interactive and viewable on any internet-enabled device.

A Garda spokesman said: “With more than 80,000 people expected to attend this event each day, a traffic management and parking plan has been put in place.

“In order for traffic to be able to move to and from the event unhindered during these times, the help of all road users is required.

“Gardaí urges road users not taking part in the national plowing championships to avoid the N80 at Stradbally and all access roads to the village of Ratheniska from Tuesday 20 September at 6am until Thursday 22 September at 8pm.

“For National Plowing Championships competitors, please check the Traffic Management Plan on or in advance to find the correct route depending on where you are traveling from.”
