Traffic builds up on all routes to the National Plowing Championships in Ratheniska, Co. Laois.
Yesterday motorists reported queuing for an hour along the N80 towards the entrance of the venue as over 90,000 people attended the first day of the three day agricultural showcase.
Traffic is already heavy on the N77 towards Abbeyleix from the Swan Road.
Traffic builds up ahead of junction 17 on the M7 in Portlaoise, while delays are also building up on the R445 outside the city.
Traffic is also increasing on the R422 outside Mountmellick, along the N80 at Stradbally and on the R426 and R427 towards Ratheniska.
Further afield, delays build up on the M6 at the Tullamore junction.
Gardaí are asking participants in the Plowing Championships not to use Google Maps, but instead to follow their directions and local signage as 80,000 people are expected at the festival each day.
The national championships returned yesterday for the first time since the pandemic and will run until tomorrow September 22nd.
It is also the first time Ireland has hosted the World Plowing Championships as Russia was previously set to host the 2022 games.
Gardaí have urged participants in the three-day festival to follow their traffic management plan.
They’ve put together six different routes based on where the bettors are traveling from and these are interactive and viewable on any internet-enabled device.
A Garda spokesman said: “With more than 80,000 people expected to attend this event each day, a traffic management and parking plan has been put in place.
“In order for traffic to be able to move to and from the event unhindered during these times, the help of all road users is required.
“Gardaí urges road users not taking part in the national plowing championships to avoid the N80 at Stradbally and all access roads to the village of Ratheniska from Tuesday 20 September at 6am until Thursday 22 September at 8pm.
“For National Plowing Championships competitors, please check the Traffic Management Plan on Garda.ie or NPA.ie in advance to find the correct route depending on where you are traveling from.”
