Tragedy at Solihull Lake: Family pays tribute to ‘our beautiful boys’

The four boys who died after falling into a frozen lake Solihull on Sunday were named by West Midlands Police.

Brothers Samuel Butler, six, and Finlay Butler, eight, their cousin Thomas Stewart, 11, and Jack Johnson, 10.

Samuel died as the fourth child on Wednesday night after falling into a freezing lake.

The youngster had been fighting for his life in hospital since Sunday’s incident in Babbs Mill Lake, Solihull, near Birmingham.

Her parents said: “As a family we are devastated at the loss of our beautiful boys Tom, Fin and Sam in such tragic circumstances. We would like to thank the emergency services for all they did to save the boys and the community for their support which was overwhelming.

“We would like to offer our condolences to Jack’s family at this very sad time and ask for privacy from the media to begin the grieving.”

West Midlands Police’s Supt Rich Harris said: “This is an indescribable tragedy and unimaginable sadness for the families and friends of the boys.

“The support from the community has been overwhelming, not only for the bereaved but also for the emergency services, for which we are very grateful.
