A father of two died in front of his devastated family after collapsing after they enjoyed a meal at Toby Carvery’s.
Mark Hicklin’s daughter Laura struggled to save her father by performing CPR until paramedics arrived with the help of an off-duty nurse, but the 55-year-old could not be saved.
Mark’s son Matthew narrated Birmingham Live : “It came so suddenly. My father had eaten at the Toby Carvery with my mother Alison and my sister Laura.
“They had just finished their meal when my father collapsed.
“Laura and other people in the restaurant rushed to him. My sister gave him CPR while they waited for the paramedics to arrive.
“She was helped by an off duty nurse named Rebecca who was amazing.
“Paramedics then took over and did their best to keep him alive. But he died.
“It was a huge shock to my mother and sister and to the whole family.”
Matthew said his father had been suffering from ailments including kidney problems and diabetes for some time and took early retirement from his job at Royal Mail, where he worked for 30 years, late last year.
Matthew said: “He had been waiting for his pension to arrive for months, which had been stressing him out. His retirement finally came on March 3rd and he had spent Villa merchandise, new glasses and something for my mother.
“Then he was dead just three days later. My father was a larger than life character. He was the life and soul of the party.
“He loved his family and lived for them. We never had much money, but my father always took care of us.
“He was a huge Villa fan and had a season pass at the Holte End for many years. I went with him when I was a little boy. Buying us that season pass every year was a burden on him, but he always managed to get us one.
“He was an amazing father and loved by everyone. I would like to thank the staff at the Toby Carvery, off duty nurse Rebecca and all the paramedics for their efforts.”
Laura and Matthew have set up a GoFundMe campaign as the family wants to raise money to buy a defibrillator to be placed in the restaurant.
They also want to place defibrillators at locations in the Castle Vale area of Birmingham to save lives.
Mark’s funeral will be held at Sutton Coldfield Crematorium on Tuesday 12 April at 1.45pm.
