On this day in 2011: Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain signs for Arsenal

Arsenal completed the £15million signing of Southampton winger Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain on this day in 2011.

Saints announced Oxlade-Chamberlain had moved to Emirates Stadium in a club-record sale. The Gunners paid £12m up front with a further £3m in add-ons.

Arsene Wenger praised 17-year-old Oxlade-Chamberlain as a player with great potential.

“We are very pleased that Alex has decided to join us,” said Wenger. “He’s an exciting young player who will provide us with creativity and offensive quality.

“Alex is a versatile player who can play in many positions. He can play as an attacking central midfielder or left and right flank.

“Alex is a sharp passer, has a great understanding of the game and appears to be a very good team player.”

Oxlade-Chamberlain still had to compete at a higher level than League One but his signing, despite the size of the transfer fee, was seen as a coup for Arsenal.

Manchester United and Liverpool also expressed interest in Southampton Academy’s product, but the Gunners prevailed over their rivals.

“Arsenal have a great coach in Arsene Wenger, quality players and an attractive style of play,” said Oxlade-Chamberlain.

“These were all important factors in why I decided to sign with Arsenal.”

Oxlade-Chamberlain played 198 games and scored 20 goals in his six seasons with the Gunners. He won the FA Cup three times before signing for Liverpool in August 2017.

With the Reds, he won the Champions League in 2019 and the Premier League the following season. He has also represented England 35 times.

Chelsea are eyeing younger defenders

Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel was delighted with the performances of Thiago Silva, Cesar Azpilicueta and Kalidou Koulibaly on Saturday, but with the back three together 100 years old, he knows the club must secure the next generation of defenders.

“We’re so lucky to have players like Azpi, Thiago and Kalidou, but it’s also important that the next generation comes along to take over in the years to come,” he said.

“The game is very physical and very demanding, that’s the situation, so we need other players to rotate with these guys.

“In general, it’s a fact that we have the back three, the goalkeeper and the double sixes in Jorginho and N’Golo (Kante) who are all in their 30s.

“That’s the way it is and while we’re so happy with these guys, we have to think about the future too.”
