OPERATION Transformation leader Kathleen was in tears tonight as she organized sending out beautiful memorial cards for her late sister.
The past year has been difficult for Kathleen and her family. In December 2020, her older sister, Susan, became unwell and died suddenly.
It was discovered that she had undiagnosed ovarian cancer. Losing her sister was the hardest experience in Kathleen’s life.
After avoiding sending Susan’s card, Kathleen felt duty in the show.
She said with tears in her eyes: “Her memorial cards are beautiful. They are two paintings of Susan, front and back and some portraits of her that she loves very much.
“It’s great to have a legacy of some of her paintings in the house because it really gives us a great sense of her presence.
“I have a few pictures of her, luckily enough, around my house and my parents have too.”
Shortly after Susan died, Kathleen was screened for ovarian cancer and doctors discovered a benign cyst.
In May 2021, she had her cysts and ovaries removed and immediately entered surgical menopause.
She discussed the symptoms she suffered as a result of the surgical menopause with GP Sumi Dunne.
She said: “The night started to sweat and at night even my feet would get very hot, I put them in water and night ice by the bed to cool them down.
“Only that it’s dark, I’d say you can actually see the steam coming out of it, I feel very hot.”
The couple talked about possibly putting her on HRT to alleviate this.
Kathleen Hurley Mullins previously said “heartbreaking” after her sister died of ovarian cancer, which prompted her to join the show.
“It was a bit of a boost because my sister died of undiagnosed ovarian cancer and they called it a silent killer and in our case it really was,” she explains.
“It crawled over her. It was a pain in her leg and before we knew it she was taken to A&E and unfortunately didn’t stand a chance.
“At that stage, she was covered with tumors and died ten days later on December 27.
“To be honest with you, it was heartbreaking at the time. The worst thing that’s ever happened to me but for Susan, I want to live the most fulfilling life I can.”
