OPERATION Transition leader Stefano was in tears tonight as he took his first steps towards quitting.
The Italian-born man has kept the habit for 20 years, starting when he was 13 years old, and now smokes around 30 a day.
He explained that even a recent bout of health scare wasn’t enough to make him quit.
“Last year, I started having pain in my chest and couldn’t tell anyone,” he said.
“I don’t really put it down on a cigarette, I don’t know what it is.
“I told [my husband] Ger, ‘I’m not feeling well, I can’t breathe, I need to go to the hospital’.
“So I spent a night in the hospital on a ventilator to get my breath back.
“I really think so. But like, when I come out, I smoke again.
“Gerard was scared. He always told me that he always had the feeling he was going to be a young widow.
“”If you keep going down the path you’re on,” he told me, “You won’t have a long life. You have to stop somewhere “.”
Stefano went to the local clinic to help him cut down on cigarettes.
But it wasn’t easy for him to do so, and he was in tears as he began to move towards his goal.
“It’s a lifelong habit that I do every day but that’s why I think I’m emotional because it’s committing to something,” he said.
“And it knows I’m going to wake up the next morning or the next morning and say, ‘today’s the day'”
At the time of his weight, Stefano had lost 6 pounds in his first week and had cut down on cigarettes.
“I’ve cut back, which is really great for me because I cut my two mornings off,” he said.
Stefano also explained that he likes to go out at night to exercise or choose quiet routes.
He adds that he can experience anxiety and panic attacks and feels more comfortable exercising this way.
However, psychologist Dr. Eddie Murphy advises that behaviors to avoid could exacerbate his anxiety and challenge him to jog in more crowded areas.
His goal for next week is two public workouts and his weight loss goal is 3lbs.
