Treasury officials seized €390,000 worth of ‘smuggled’ alcohol at Rosslare Europort last weekend.

Around 48,500 liters of beer and more than 16,100 liters of wine were confiscated during searches.

“On Friday, September 30, tax officials seized over 23,300 liters of beer and more than 16,100 liters of wine with an estimated total retail value of 290,000 euros, representing a potential loss to the Treasury of 149,000 euros,” said a spokesman for the tax authority.

The spokesman said: “On Saturday October 1, tax officials seized over 25,200 liters of beer following a search of a Romanian-registered lorry that had disembarked from a ferry from Dunkirk, France. The smuggled alcohol had an estimated retail value of almost €101,000, representing a potential loss to the Treasury of more than €47,000.”

Revenue said the seizures are part of its ongoing operations targeting the “black economy and smuggling” and that investigations are ongoing.
