Triona McCarthy reveals her top makeup and hair new releases for 2023

I’ve always been very inspired by someone over 50 on Instagram – even more so now that I’m approaching that age myself. Colleen Heidemann (72) is such a woman. I admire her signature puffy gray hair, beautiful skin and inimitable style. I’m also grateful that the beauty industry has evolved over the years to show us how women of all ages can enjoy fashion and beauty. Google her attendance at the CFDA Fashion Awards in 2021 where she rocked a very chic outfit.

nyhoo, after all the celebrations I feel and look like 106, so there’s no doubt our skin needs a little extra TLC – especially with at least a month of cold weather remaining.

I’ll say it until I’m blue in the face, but daily SPF is a must, and it’s also very important to protect your skin barrier — the bodyguard that keeps all harmful toxins out. Products with niacinamide and antioxidants can help maintain a healthy barrier.

Here’s a tip I have to keep in mind – get good sleep. One way is to stop drinking and eating at least an hour before bed. It’s all well and good not to overeat or drink, but if we’ve indulged, what do we do? I always have to remind myself to drink plenty of water and herbal tea the day after to fully rehydrate myself.

So get to the kettle, folks!

“Take a dryer sheet and poke the bristles of your hairbrush through before you start brushing.”

The trick

If the cold weather is causing your hair to frizz more than usual, grab a dryer sheet and pierce the bristles of your hairbrush before you start brushing, et voila — less flyaways and a smoother, tamed mane.

Black is brown and silver is gold is one of my main mantras for 2023. What I mean is gold is the metal everyone wants to wear now while black is still in Siberia – even when it comes to mascara!

Brown is the nuance du jour to wear on your lashes. It’s a color that complements almost every eye.

It’s also great when you get a little further as it’s less harsh than black. If great makeup is your thing, Too Faced Better Than Sex Mascara, above, €29.99, might live up to its name for you. It helps that the packaging reminds me of intense, melted chocolate – just one coat gives fuller, longer lashes.

The formula is enriched with peptides to keep lashes well-groomed, while the hourglass-shaped brush easily gets to hard-to-reach strands. The formula is ophthalmologically tested, making it ideal for contact lens wearers and sensitive eyes.

This is a brown that suits day and night with the added bonus of being able to dip your toe in a big upcoming trend for the year to come. Find it at Arnotts and Brown Thomas.

I know we’re all a little broke after Christmas, but we can still dream of better days, right? One of the trendiest new places in Ireland is The Spa at the Cashel Palace Hotel in Co. Tipperary.

This five-star spot is heaven for anyone who is skincare-obsessed, as Skin by Olga’s Olga Kochlewska has been the resident beautician since it opened last March.

She spent two days a month at the spa pampering residents with her signature facials. Olga has a salon in Dublin 4 and was the first skincare professional to launch Swiss brand Valmont in Ireland. Actress Jodie Comer is a fan of her bright, glowing results.

Olga’s facial treatments combine a multi-current lifting machine and Valmont products tailored to your skin’s needs. A facial here will leave you with more radiant and toned skin, with the added bonus of enjoying the luxurious facilities on the same day.
