Triona McCarthy reveals her top makeup and hair new releases for 2023
I’ve always been very inspired by someone over 50 on Instagram – even more so now that I’m approaching that age myself. Colleen Heidemann (72) is such a woman. I admire her signature puffy gray hair, beautiful skin and inimitable style. I’m also grateful that the beauty industry has evolved over the years to show us how women of all ages can enjoy fashion and beauty. Google her attendance at the CFDA Fashion Awards in 2021 where she rocked a very chic outfit.
nyhoo, after all the celebrations I feel and look like 106, so there’s no doubt our skin needs a little extra TLC – especially with at least a month of cold weather remaining.
I’ll say it until I’m blue in the face, but daily SPF is a must, and it’s also very important to protect your skin barrier — the bodyguard that keeps all harmful toxins out. Products with niacinamide and antioxidants can help maintain a healthy barrier.
Here’s a tip I have to keep in mind – get good sleep. One way is to stop drinking and eating at least an hour before bed. It’s all well and good not to overeat or drink, but if we’ve indulged, what do we do? I always have to remind myself to drink plenty of water and herbal tea the day after to fully rehydrate myself.
So get to the kettle, folks!
If the cold weather is causing your hair to frizz more than usual, grab a dryer sheet and pierce the bristles of your hairbrush before you start brushing, et voila — less flyaways and a smoother, tamed mane.
Hair tools using artificial intelligence have entered my world now. the Remington PROluxe you The range includes products that learn about your specific hair needs as you use them. This Adaptive Straightener, €194.99, stores your hair information and optimizes the heat to suit your hair. There is also a hair dryer, hot brush and curling iron to get used to. See boots.ie

Black is brown and silver is gold is one of my main mantras for 2023. What I mean is gold is the metal everyone wants to wear now while black is still in Siberia – even when it comes to mascara!
Brown is the nuance du jour to wear on your lashes. It’s a color that complements almost every eye.
It’s also great when you get a little further as it’s less harsh than black. If great makeup is your thing, Too Faced Better Than Sex Mascara, above, €29.99, might live up to its name for you. It helps that the packaging reminds me of intense, melted chocolate – just one coat gives fuller, longer lashes.
The formula is enriched with peptides to keep lashes well-groomed, while the hourglass-shaped brush easily gets to hard-to-reach strands. The formula is ophthalmologically tested, making it ideal for contact lens wearers and sensitive eyes.
This is a brown that suits day and night with the added bonus of being able to dip your toe in a big upcoming trend for the year to come. Find it at Arnotts and Brown Thomas.

I know we’re all a little broke after Christmas, but we can still dream of better days, right? One of the trendiest new places in Ireland is The Spa at the Cashel Palace Hotel in Co. Tipperary.
This five-star spot is heaven for anyone who is skincare-obsessed, as Skin by Olga’s Olga Kochlewska has been the resident beautician since it opened last March.
She spent two days a month at the spa pampering residents with her signature facials. Olga has a salon in Dublin 4 and was the first skincare professional to launch Swiss brand Valmont in Ireland. Actress Jodie Comer is a fan of her bright, glowing results.
Olga’s facial treatments combine a multi-current lifting machine and Valmont products tailored to your skin’s needs. A facial here will leave you with more radiant and toned skin, with the added bonus of enjoying the luxurious facilities on the same day.
New beauties on the block
Now I know we’re far more aware than ever of buying too much, cluttering the house, and sending too much to the landfill, but sometimes we really need to stock up. In order to shop well and not spontaneously, I have compiled some of my top new releases for 2023. From new mascaras to hair products, this line-up is sure to feature a staple or two that will live in your makeup bag or on your vanity table for a very long time.
I always say a new lipstick is a great cheap pick-me-up, so if you’re a fan of Gen See Pick Me Up Matte Lipstick line, you’ll be happy to hear that four new shades, €24 each, have joined the fam. Each of the soft matte shades is rich in pigment, won’t dry out your lips and lasts as long as you need it to. Choose Naomia brick red, pictured above; reva rich rosy red; ski, a deep burgundy; or Tobia berry pink. See genseebeauty.com.
Charlotte Tilbury the year 2023 has started with the launch of Hollywood highlighter, above, €44; It hit the shelves just a few days ago. Available in eight fabulous shades ranging from Pearlescent Glow, a nude pink, to Bronze Glow, a rich bronze shade, the collection is sure to suit all skin tones and looks.
Hairbrushes aren’t just for detangling, you know! A good one will get your scalp’s blood flow pumping, promoting healthy hair roots and better hair growth. For a little luxury every day, check this out Yellow universal hair care brushabove, 128 €, from French brand, La Bonne Brosse. Native to Southeast Asia, boar bristles are rich in keratin, making them naturally non-allergic and static resistant. And while it may sound expensive, this brush is a hair care product that will last a lifetime. The cellulose acetate of the handle is an organic resin composed of cotton flowers and wooden beads.
For fans of designer fragrances, why not stop by Armani Privé Santal Dān Shā, from €123. This is a fresh, juicy scent with a rich base note of sandalwood that ensures it’s not overly sweet. The notes are also well-travelled, with sandalwood from New Caledonia, cardamom heart from Guatemala and bergamot heart from Italy.
