Triona McCarthy: sun protection products and the unveiling of the new celebrity ambassador for Armani fragrances

One of the hardest parts of my job is keeping secrets. I am a gossip and a much sharer. So when I’m asked to share a big launch or exciting piece of news, I have to expend all my energy to make sure I don’t miss anything.

You know, I know if this is the hardest part of my job, I have absolutely nothing to complain about. And I had even less to complain about last month when I flew to London to meet the new face of Armani – a secret I was able to keep to myself until recently. Drum roll please – the new face of Armani Code is the absolutely gorgeous Regé Jean Page.

The former Bridgerton star is the embodiment of this new release – masculine yet modest and effortlessly cool, just like the Armani brand. Armani Code is packaged in a new eye-catching bottle that is refillable. Those who are already a fan of the scent will be pleased that it has retained its woody aroma and richness.

The new product will be launched in September and Page is already working closely with the brand after attending the Giorgio Armani Spring/Summer 2023 Menswear Collection Show in Milan. And yes, I was a little shaken and touched – oops!

If you want a no-makeup makeup look but can’t part with your foundation, make your freckles and blemishes stand out. For a very modern look, use a brown kohl pencil to add some sunspots or bring out those hidden freckles!

Bada Bader bing!

I recently met Professor Augustinus Bader, the biomedical scientist and medical scientist, at an exclusive lunch. As an expert in stem cell biology and regenerative medicine with 30 years of experience, Bader knows what skin-friendly formulations are all about.

The light cream with TFC8, 155 €.

The newest addition to Bader’s science-based skincare line is The Light Cream With TFC8, €155. It was featured at the last event so I had to try it first hand – and it’s worth the hype!

This is a light, mattifying moisturizer that improves the complexion and moisturizes without leaving the skin shiny. It is ideal for all skin types but good for particularly combination and oily skin. A perfect summer release when the air is humid and skin needs a little help dealing with sweat and oil. See

screen time

News just arrived! Lancôme Skin Screen is now available in Brown Thomas Cork, Galway and Limerick and in Dundrum – where I recently tested this free service.

See your skin like never before with this super high-tech device that analyzes texture, red spots, brown spots, moisture, firmness, wrinkles, fine lines, clogged pores and UV damage.

Best of all, you can then create a customized skincare routine that works for you and your skin concerns.

In an effort to be more eco-friendly, refill packs are all the rage now. If you’re looking for a new fragrance or you’re a fan of lingerie brand La Perla, check out the signature Eau de Parfum, from €68.50 for 30ml. You can now buy a 100ml refill , which offers amazing value for money at €105.50. See

Hot to trot

As you read this I am on holiday in my home town of Schull in West Cork with all my family including my little sister Laura who is at home from Oz with baby Archie and her husband Adam.

Usually on a summer Sunday we stroll through the market, have lunch at The Townhouse OD’s – my uncle’s house – and then maybe go for a walk or swim at a nearby beach. The perfect day is crowned with a drink in the sun in front of one of the village pubs. So between lots of fresh sea air, water and sun exposure on any given day, I need to make sure my skin is really well protected. Here are some of my new favorite SPFs. Luckily, they’ve come a long way from the thick formulas that take ages to absorb and leave you looking paler than before your day in the sun.

First up is Ultrasun Extreme SPF 50, €22. I picked it up at Millie’s pop up shop in Dundrum. It can be used all over the body but is not heavy as you would expect from an SPF 50. Ideal for sensitive skin, packed with antioxidants, vitamins E and B5. It’s unscented and perfect for anyone with allergies – especially since they’re the last thing we need during hay fever season. Skin Formulas is a skin care range developed by Esthetician Geraldine Jones of Mediskin Clinic in Nenagh, Co. Tipperary. The line is based on the use of active ingredients for great results. If you’re looking for a new routine, Skin Formulas offers a quick and easy morning and evening regimen.

CeraVe Micellar Cleansing Water

CeraVe Micellar Cleansing Water, €11, is a gentle addition to the skincare brand’s line. CereVe’s first micellar water available in Ireland works as a make-up remover and contains niacinamide and three ceramides to protect the skin’s natural barrier. It is now available in pharmacies nationwide.

The hello sunday line has a new high SPF sunscreen that is light enough to be used all year round. It also protects against blue light, infrared light and air pollution. New to the range is the Mineral Eye Cream SPF 50 for your eyes, €22, which I’m loving right now.
