Trooper Shane Kearney is scheduled to be flown home today

Soldier Shane Kearney, who was seriously injured while serving as part of the UN peacekeeping mission in Lebanon, will be flown back to Ireland today.

Defense Forces confirmed the 22-year-old will be flown from Beirut Airport to Casement Aerodrome, Baldonnel, Co Dublin.

A specially equipped and contractually agreed medical aircraft is used. The flight is scheduled to land at the airport this afternoon.

Trooper Kearney is then taken to Beaumont Hospital by ambulance for further medical treatment.

A Defense Forces spokesman said Mr Kearney continues to improve and remains in stable condition.

His comrade Private Seán Rooney was killed during the peacekeeping mission.

He was shot dead when the armored vehicle he was in was attacked and turned over after he was separated from a convoy driving troops to Beirut airport last week.

The body of the slain peacekeeper arrived in Ireland on Monday, where his family were reunited with his remains.

His funeral will be held tomorrow in Dundalk, Co Louth, ahead of his funeral in Co Donegal.

The procession of Pte Rooney to Holy Family Church in Dundalk will take place at 8.30am, followed by a funeral service in Colehill, Co Donegal at 3.30pm.

He is buried with full military honors.

Taoiseach Leo Varadkar said he is confident the investigation will elucidate the sequence of events leading up to the killing.

They want to clarify why the SUV deviated from a main route and entered the village of Al-Aqbiyah, which is controlled by the militant group Hezbollah. Trooper Shane Kearney is scheduled to be flown home today
