Former President Donald Trump unleashed a tirade against House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., ahead of her possible trip to Taiwan amid heightened tensions with China. Trump warned that Pelosi’s visit to the self-governing island would only make things worse.
“Everything she touches turns into chaos, disruption and [expletive]’ Trump wrote on his TruthSocial account on Friday. “The China mess is the last thing she should be involved in – she will only make it worse.”
Trump’s comments come a day after President Joe Biden held his fifth phone call with President Xi Jinping of China. In a phone call lasting more than two hours, Xi warned Biden against “playing with fire” by allowing Pelosi to visit Taiwan or encouraging Taiwan independence from China.
Taiwan has been self-governing since 1949, when Chinese nationalist forces took refuge on the island after the Communist Party’s victory in a bloody civil war. Since 1979, the United States has pursued a one-China policy, with Washington recognizing the government in Beijing as China’s sole representative while continuing to support Taipei.
Biden himself was concerned about the possibility of Pelosi visiting Taiwan on her upcoming trip to Asia. This week, the president said the US military had raised concerns about the trip, and CNN reported that Pentagon officials had briefed Pelosi on the potential risks. Pelosi herself took note of the warning, but did not swear off her travel plans.
Trump, who prompted the US to take a more confrontational approach in relations with China, broke with his Republicans by stopping Pelosi’s trip from going ahead. Despite China’s bellicose warnings of “consequences,” Republican lawmakers have encouraged Pelosi to stick with her plans rather than give in to Beijing.
Trump has also staked out a position that is at odds with members of his previous administration.
Former US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo even went so far Offer to accompany Pelosi, proudly announces the fact that he is banned from entering mainland China. John Bolton, who was serving as Trump’s national security adviser before the two experienced a falling out, also urged Pelosi on her plans.
“Let Pelosi go to #Taiwan. It will tell us a lot about who actually controls American foreign policy: Washington or Beijing. Doing more than ranting is a lot riskier for them than it is for us,” Bolton tweeted Monday.
