Special Counsel Jack Smith issued a brief statement on the federal allegations against the former president, saying that Trump’s “lies… designed to impede a basic function of the US government” fueled the events of January 6, 2021.
Smith is expected to be present at Thursday’s arraignment. He also hinted at charges against other individuals.
“Since the attack on our Capitol, the Justice Department has continued to work to hold accountable those criminally responsible for that day’s events,” he said Tuesday. “This case is consistent with that commitment and our investigations into others continue.”
