Trump thinks ‘spoiled’ Brittney Griner probably deserves a Russian jail

Former President Donald Trump has criticized the Biden administration’s plan to swap a Russian arms dealer for the release of WNBA player Brittney Griner, calling the American basketball star a “potentially spoiled person”.

In a speech on Friday’s Clay Travis & Buck Sexton Show, Trump said trading Russian arms dealer Viktor Bout for the freedom of Griner and jailed former US Marine Paul Wheeler “doesn’t seem like a very good deal.”

‘She knew you didn’t go in there full of drugs and she admitted it. I suppose she admitted it without too much force, because it is, and it certainly doesn’t seem like a very good trade, does it? said Trump. “He’s absolutely one of the worst in the world, and he’s going to get his freedom because a potentially spoiled person is going to Russia loaded with drugs.”

Griner, a two-time Olympic gold medalist, has been held in Russia since February when authorities in Moscow found vape cartridges containing cannabis oil in her luggage. Cannabis is considered illegal in Russia.

Griner, who pleaded guilty earlier this month, said she has a prescription for medical marijuana to help with the pain. The American basketball star argued that an interpreter failed to translate most of what authorities told her while she was being held at Sheremetyevo International Airport. She also noted that the authorities at the airport had her documents signed without explaining what the papers were for.

“The translations were not very good. I remember once seeing a stack of papers for him to hand me, and he looked at me for a brief moment, and his exact words were basically, ‘You’re guilty,'” Griner said in testimony.

Bout, known as the “dealer of death,” is currently serving a 25-year sentence for conspiring to kill Americans, conspiring to supply anti-aircraft missiles, and supporting a terrorist organization. According to the New York Times, he is accused of selling weapons to al-Qaeda and the Taliban, among other things.

Bout was arrested in 2008 in a covert operation in which he was preparing to supply $20 million worth of weapons to informants for the Drug Enforcement Administration posing as members of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia. The US classifies the group as a narco-terrorist organization.
