Truss is accused of throwing Kwasi Kwarteng under a bus over tax cuts

The Prime Minister has been accused of throwing Chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng “under a bus” today, saying that the Decision to reduce income tax for the richest were made by the chancellor and not by the cabinet.

Former Minister of Culture, Nadine Dorriescriticized Truss’s comments on the first day of the Tory conference in Birmingham.

What is the tax cut?

The new tax cut would see the 45% tax rate abolished on income over £150,000.

This has seen a negative reaction since its announcement as a country faces a livelihood crisis. Some Conservative MPs also expressed anger at the cut.

However, Truss appears to be implying that the decision was Kwarteng’s alone, and said they had not discussed the controversial plan with the wider cabinet.

She told the BBC on Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg: “No, no, we don’t have that. It was a decision by the Chancellor.”

Ms Dorries responded by tweeting that “one of ‘Boris Johnson’s’ faults was that he could be too loyal at times”.

“However, there is a balance and throwing your chancellor under a bus on the first day of the conference really isn’t,” she continued.

Keeping her fingers crossed, she added, “Things are improving and settling down from now on.”

The row comes after Downing Street denied there had been a row between Truss and Kwarteng over how the pound should be dealt with when it plummeted after announcing plans to pay for £45billion in tax cuts through borrowing .

The Prime Minister’s defense of Mr Kwarteng, who attended a private champagne reception with hedge fund managers who would benefit from a pound sterling collapse following his mini-budget, also appeared less than full-bodied.

“I don’t manage Kwasi Kwarteng’s diary, believe me,” Ms Truss told the BBC. Truss is accused of throwing Kwasi Kwarteng under a bus over tax cuts
