Tsunami warning after powerful 7.6 magnitude earthquake hits Mexico

A powerful earthquake struck near the coast of western Mexico on Monday, the anniversary of two devastating tremors, shaking buildings and sending Mexico City residents into the streets to seek safety.

Shortly after 1 p.m. local time, the quake, which was recorded by the US Geological Survey with a magnitude of 7.6, occurred near the coast in the border area of ​​the states of Michoacan and Colima at a depth of about 15 km.

The US Tsunami Warning System said there was a risk of a tsunami near the Michoacan coast, with the possibility of waves up to 3m above sea level on western Mexico’s coasts.

Mexico City Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum said there were no immediate reports of damage in the capital after the tremors that struck Mexico on the same day that major tremors struck the country in 1985 and 2017.

The 1985 earthquake killed thousands and the 2017 quake killed more than 350.
