TUI told passengers sitting on the plane on the runway that their flight had been cancelled, sparking angry scenes at Cardiff Airport.

Holidaymakers were left “in tears” as passengers got stuck on the tarmac before being escorted off the plane when travel agency TUI suddenly canceled an entire holiday package to Tenerife, reported Wales Online.

Passengers sat waiting for their flight to Tenerife, which was delayed by an hour. They then had to wait another hour after boarding the plane because of a broken part.

While the part was being repaired, passengers received text messages and emails from the German holiday giant informing them that their entire holiday had been cancelled.

TUI said the cancellation was due to “operational and supply chain issues” combined with the influx of people going on holiday at this time of year.

It has assured that all affected customers are entitled to compensation and will receive an “additional goodwill gesture” from the company.

However, TUI’s goodwill gesture has not been well received by passengers who are “absolutely devastated”.

Huw Davies, from Porthcawl, boarded the plane with 11 other family members for a “special holiday” for his terminally ill daughter.

He said the sudden news of the cancellation left her “absolutely devastated” and his children and grandchildren were in tears.

He said: “This was a family outing for my daughter who has terminal cancer. It was supposed to be her last family vacation – and we just got kicked off that flight.

“I think it’s a lot of shit that they say the engine failed because the plane had flown in from Alicante.

“If this part obviously malfunctioned on the way to the airport, then why the hell did they load us up?

He learned of the flight cancellation from other passengers on the plane who had received emails, but said he had not received any yet.

He said: “I called TUI headquarters and a message comes straight through saying they are looking into it and we will be contacted.

“So they knew they were going to cancel that flight and several across the country.”

He recalled that passengers were told to disembark before being taken into the airport terminal and someone from TUI would show up to meet them.

“But it wasn’t that. It was a woman [another] Travel agent,” Huw said, adding that the rep told them the cancellation was due to the faulty part.

He reminded that the police were present in the terminal in case passengers were “departed”. He said: “[TUI’s policy] is that they should deliver another flight. We had it in black and white and we showed it to them.”

When asked how important the holiday was to his family, he said his son booked the trip as a surprise for his daughter.

“It was a special holiday and to make matters worse we asked my daughter where she would like to go as she recently lost her mother.

“She wanted to go back to where we vacationed with my wife for the first time.”

He estimates the family paid up to £9,000 to TUI, excluding any fees for other travel-related costs.

“We are all our own bag,” he said. “We put our faith in these people, who should have gotten us where we’re going in a different way, and they didn’t have the decency to do so.”
