Twitter claims that user growth has hit an “all-time high” since Musk acquired it

Twitter said user growth has hit “all-time highs” since it was acquired by billionaire Elon Musk last month.

In an email sent to the reassuring advertiser, the social media platform said the growth of its self-assessed “monetizable active daily users (mDAUs)” has accelerated since the acquisition.

The email, seen by the Financial Times, reads, “Twitter’s largest market, the US, is growing even faster.”

The email also said that Twitter’s monetizable daily active users have surpassed “the quarter-billion mark” since late June.

Tesla owner Musk finalized the $44 billion deal to buy Twitter in recent weeks and has since announced big changes, including verified account fees and significant job cuts.

Twitter employs more than 500 people in Dublin and more than 7,000 people worldwide. On Friday morning, all staff were told not to enter the office and that those who were being made redundant would be notified via email.

“Team, to put Twitter on a healthy path, on Friday we will go through the difficult process of reducing our global workforce,” an internal memo to employees read.

“We recognize that this will impact a number of individuals who have made valuable contributions to Twitter, but unfortunately this action is necessary to ensure the continued success of the company.”

Over the weekend, Taoiseach Micheal Martin said the company’s employees deserve to be “treated with respect”.

“The termination without notice or you no longer work [for Twitter]is unacceptable,” he added.

“This is not how we conduct labor relations or organize relations between employers and employees.

“In such situations, respect and dignity must prevail.”

Twitter has confirmed it will honor all legal obligations to workers locked out of its Dublin headquarters while engaging in 30-day consultations.

There are growing concerns that Meta – Facebook’s parent company, which employs over 6,000 people in Ireland – could also announce job cuts in the coming days.

This was confirmed by a spokesman for the Department of Enterprise Irish Independent that it has yet to receive any notifications from Twitter or Meta regarding layoffs.

On Monday, the Musk, who describes himself as a “Twitter Complaint Hotline operator,” tweeted: “Twitter usage is at an all time high lol. I just hope the servers don’t melt!”

The competing platform Mastodon has seen a huge increase in users since it was acquired by Musk. In a message published on Twitter over the weekend, Mastodon’s Irish server said it was processing a large number of new accounts.

“Hello #IrishTwitter! Many of you are waiting for your accounts to be approved. We’ll gradually let people in when we’re confident our systems can handle it. We can’t wait to welcome you soon,” Mastodon wrote.

Mastodon’s mission statement states: “At Mastodon, we present a vision of social media that no billionaire can buy and own. Your ability to communicate online should not be left to the whims of a single commercial enterprise.” Twitter claims that user growth has hit an “all-time high” since Musk acquired it
