A security warning has been issued to anyone using the social media platform. Twitter.
It comes after a former Twitter The security chief told US Congress that the platform was plagued by weak cyber defenses, privacy threats and an inability to control millions of fake accounts.
Peiter “Mudge” Zatko, a respected cybersecurity expert, appeared before the US Senate Judiciary Committee to lay out his allegations.
At the beginning of his testimony, Mr. Zatko said, “Twitter misleads the public, legislators” and regulators.
The platform is “more than a decade behind best industry standards,” he added. “This is a big deal for all of us.”
“It doesn’t matter who has keys if there are no locks.”
“Twitter made false claims about cybersecurity”
Zatko made the allegations in question after he was fired as Twitter’s head of security earlier this year.
Among its most serious allegations is that Twitter violated the terms of a 2011 FTC settlement by falsely claiming it had tightened measures to protect the security and privacy of its users.
Twitter has responded to security claims as part of Elon Musk’s bid
Twitter has called Mr Zatko’s description of events “a false narrative… riddled with contradictions and inaccuracies” that lacks important context.
Many of Mr Zatko’s claims are uncorroborated and appear to have little documentary support.
Mr Zatko’s claims could also concern the Tesla billionaire Elon Musk‘s attempt to back out of its $44 billion deal to take over the social platform.
Mr. Zatko also accuses the company of fraud in dealing with automated “spam bots” or fake accounts.
That claim is at the heart of Mr Musk’s attempt to back out of his deal to buy Twitter.
Mr Musk and Twitter are locked in a bitter legal battle, with Twitter suing Mr Musk to force him to complete the deal.
