Two dead in light plane crash in Co Down

Two people have been killed in a small plane crash in Co Down.

The crash happened just after 8 p.m. at Newtownards Airport.

Shredded wreckage could be seen burning as firefighters sprayed water over the small plane.

The Northern Ireland Ambulance Service said no patients were taken from the scene.

A spokesman said they received a 999 call at 8.21pm after an incident was reported on Portaferry Road in Newtownards. Two rescue workers, a doctor and an ambulance were dispatched to the incident.

An eyewitness at the scene said so Belfast Telegraph The plane crashed into hedgerows near the Cloud 9 restaurant.

“An ambulance left the scene, but the fire department is still there,” they said.

“Lots of people gather to see what happens.

The airfield is home to the Ulster Flying Club, where many learned to fly small trainer aircraft such as Cessnas.

In a statement, a PSNI spokesman said: “Police and other emergency services are currently present at the scene of a light aircraft crash at Newtownards Airport. There are no further details.”

A spokesman for the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service also confirmed crews were at the scene.

They said crew were dispatched to the scene around 8:20 p.m. and three devices were still present last night.

Strangford MLA Kellie Armstrong expressed concern after the incident.

“It looks like a light plane crashed on landing,” she said.

“There are many fire engines at the scene and the situation is very worrying.
