Two policemen have been killed in western Germany after they were shot dead during a routine traffic stop.
The officers – a 24-year-old woman and a 29-year-old man – radioed for help after the shooting.
In a panicked final message, the pair told their superiors: “They’re shooting at us!”
The killers fled the scene after the shooting in Kusel, Rhineland-Palatinate overnight.
Police have advised the public not to pick up any hitchhikers in the area following the twin shootings.
Bild reported that officers stopped a suspicious vehicle when they discovered the deadly game in the trunk and broadcast that they would conduct an inspection.
Shortly after, the pair radioed for a second time, saying, “They’re shooting at us!” before radio contact with the patrol was suddenly cut off.
Police rushed to the scene and found a 24-year-old rookie policewoman dead.
A 29-year-old officer later died.
Investigators believe they are hunting at least two armed suspects, possibly poachers.
Bernhard Christian Erfort, a spokesman for West Palatinate police, told Bild newspaper: “Colleagues reported by radio that they were inspecting a vehicle. Soon after, they reported that a shot had been fired. Later, two people were found injured or dead.”
Westpfalz Police said in a statement: “Police are actively searching for the fugitive and are securing leads at the crime scene. There is no description of the perpetrator or the vehicle they were using. No clear direction they fled. At least one of the perpetrators was armed.”
District 22 roads in the Mayweilerhof and Ulmet areas have been completely closed, and anyone who sees anything suspicious is advised to contact Kaiserslautern police force.
Police have extended the search to include the neighboring German state of Saarland, just a short drive west of the site of the shooting.
Sabine Kunz from the Rhineland Palatinate police union said: “Our thoughts are with the loved ones of those killed and our colleagues.
“We are now living every officer’s nightmare as real. It is hoped that the perpetrators or perpetrators can be quickly caught to prevent potential danger to the wider community.”
Kusel is about 150 km southwest of Frankfurt and 40 km west of Kaiserslautern, near the US military base Ramstein.
It is close to the German border with France and Luxembourg.
