Two more gold medals for Ireland at European boxing championships

Ireland’s Niamh Fay and Lisa O’Rourke secured gold medals at the U-22 European Boxing Championships in Porec, Croatia.

Here, however, was a disappointment for middleweight Aoibhe Carabine, who was beaten in her final. But she takes home a silver medal.

Fay, from the village of Ballyboughal in north County Dublin, showed her potential with a dominant performance in the bantamweight final against Italy’s Sharon Prisco.

Fay, a former European Youth Champion, outclassed the Italian and, unsurprisingly, celebrated her victory before the official had announced the result.

Previously, O’Rourke was crowned light middleweight champion.

The Roscommon fighter beat Poland’s Daria Parada 4-1 after Split. O’Rourke, a younger sister of Tokyo Olympic and European champion Aoife, was the far busier fighter and landed the most hits in a fun match.

A versatile sportswoman, she also plays Gaelic football for her home district.

Carabine faced Karolina Makhno of Ukraine in her fight for the gold medal.

The first half was tight, but the taller Ukrainian shot a little quicker to lead 3-2 after three minutes. She then received the verdict of all five judges in the two remaining rounds to secure a unanimous victory.

Meanwhile, Ireland’s heavyweight champion Jack Marley is bidding for a gold medal in Wednesday’s tournament.

Ireland will bring home seven medals, with Paul Loonam (lightweight), Dylan Eagleson (bantamweight) and Kaci Rock (welterweight) winning bronze medals before being eliminated in their respective semifinals. Two more gold medals for Ireland at European boxing championships
