Two people died in a lithium battery fire in New York

A 36-year-old woman, a 5-year-old girl and three dogs were killed Wednesday in a New York City apartment fire caused by the lithium battery of an electric bike or electric scooter.

The girl’s 46-year-old father suffered life-threatening injuries. The woman who was killed was the man’s girlfriend.

The fire broke out around 2:40 a.m. in the East Harlem neighborhood of Manhattan.

“According to FDNY Fire Marshals, e-bike/scooter lithium-ion batteries were the cause of this morning’s deadly all-hands fire that killed two people and left another in serious condition,” the New York City Fire department said in a tweet.

The fire was confined to the apartment. The fire brigade’s work took about an hour. About 78 firefighters responded to the scene, the FDNY said.

The FDNY also reported that another deadly all-hand fire occurred Monday in the Bronx This has been confirmed to be caused by lithium-ion batteries from electric bicycles or electric scooters.

Multiple fires involving lithium batteries in Tesla vehicles have also been reported. In June, a Tesla that had been sitting in a California junkyard for three weeks not only spontaneously caught fire but reignited several times after firefighters tried to put it out.
