TWO secondary schools in Sussex have announced they will close next week due to a red heatwave warning.
Both Steyning Grammar School and Thomas Bennett Community College in Crawley will be closed for two days.
In a statement on its website, Gymnasium Steyning said: “Due to the extreme weather next week we are closed on Monday and Tuesday.
“We look forward to welcoming our students back to school on Wednesday 20th July.”
Thomas Bennett Community College sent a letter to parents and carers outlining its “online learning expectations” for students while it is closed.
It said: “As you will know, the unprecedented rising temperatures forecast for the country over the coming Monday and Tuesday are a cause for concern and we have formulated a plan to address this.
“Due to the health, safety and wellbeing of our entire school community, we have made the decision to study remotely on Monday and Tuesday.
“We encourage all students to stay at home.
“However, if you have no other alternative, there will be a small number of staff at the school.”
Other schools in Sussex have announced uniform changes for the two-day period, with Durrington High School in Worthing giving pupils the option of wearing sports kits instead of the regular uniform.
West Sussex County Council has urged school leaders to make plans ahead of the hot weather.
A spokesman said: “With temperatures expected to continue rising into next week we have contacted all schools in West Sussex to share national guidance on how to deal with severe weather.
“We have asked all principals to make preparations on how best to manage the hot weather so that students and staff can safely enjoy the final week of the school year.”
Official guidance from the Department of Education states: “We are not advising schools to close when temperatures are high, but school leaders should ensure they are taking all necessary steps to ensure children are safe and comfortable.”
