Two workers at the Mars factory fall into a vat of melted chocolate in a Willy Wonka-style mishap

Emergency services rushed to the Mars factory in Pennsylvania after two men were unable to climb out of a giant chocolate tank while calling for help and a hole had to be cut to let them out

Two workers have been rescued after falling into a vat of melted chocolate at an American Mars factory in a Willy Wonka-style mishap.

Emergency services were called to the Pennsylvania crime scene to help rescue the couple after they were unable to climb out of the giant tank.

The two men got stuck in the waist-high chocolate tank and needed help to get out.

Luckily, they escaped unharmed when the Elizabethtown Fire Department came to the rescue of the couple and got the workers out of the tank.

The incident happened just before 2 p.m. on Thursday, June 9, when more than 24 firefighters were dispatched to the scene.

According to Lancaster County, firefighters were present for an hour before the couple were rescued and helicoptered to the hospital to be checked out.

A hole was reportedly cut in the tank to allow the two men to escape. However, they weren’t “swimming in the chocolate” when they were released.

In a statement, confectionery giant Mars said: “We can confirm that both individuals have been removed from the premises for further investigation. We are extremely grateful for the quick work of the first responders.”

Located 12 miles from Hershey, Pennsylvania, the factory makes a number of well-known products such as M&Ms and Dove chocolates.

The incident evokes the events of Roald Dahl’s beloved 1964 novel Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, in which a series of troublesome children are harmed in eccentric inventor Willy Wonka’s candy factory.

A character named Augustus Gloop falls into a river of chocolate before being sucked down a pipe – luckily the Mars workers avoided such a fate.
