Tyler Childers shares powerful gay love story in new video

Fans who can’t wait for country music to lose their luck conservative reputation This week Jason Aldean got a rude awakening to “Try That in a Small Town” — a song with lyrics that causes Vigilante justice and xenophobia ― catapulted to the top of the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

But amid the controversy, singer-songwriter Tyler Childers inadvertently offers a musical counterpoint with the music video for his latest single “In Your Love”.

Directed by Bryan Schlam and produced in collaboration with a queer writer Silas houseThe video “In Your Love” is about two male miners, Jasper and Matthew (played by actors Colton Haynes and James Scully), in 1950s Appalachia, who fall in love despite facing intense homophobia at work.

In true country fashion, the couple’s year-long romance ends on a bittersweet note. However, the glimpse of a four-leaf clover reminds the viewer that the relationship was not in vain.

“In Your Love” is already a certified hit, having racked up more than 3.4 million views since its debut last week and garnering critical acclaim from all quarters billboard And Rolling Stone, among other things. The song will appear on Childers upcoming sixth album: “Rustin’ in the Rain“, will be released in September.

In an interview with NPR’s Ann PowersThe Grammy nominee said he wanted to honor his gay cousin by putting a same-sex romance at the center of his video.

“Even if you have the privilege of going through this world unfazed, it’s more important than ever to stand behind things, stand up for things and speak out,” said Childers, who is honest.

House echoed that sentiment, noting, “I think one of the things that makes Tyler such a great artist and such a great friend is that he’s so insightful. He wants to tell a story like this because he has friends and family who are members of the LGBT community and are also part of Appalachia’s history.”

“These are human stories, not political stories,” he added.

Of course, Childers couldn’t have foreseen the success of Aldean’s Try That in a Small Town when he recorded In Your Love and directed the accompanying video. Still, critic have compared childrens song cheap to Aldean and noticed this it represents a more forward-thinking Nashville.

Other country artists seemed to agree.

“I hope people share it and encourage good songwriting, deep music and positive messages, because we could use more of that right now,” says musician Margo Price tweeted.

Four-time Grammy winner Jason Isbell wrote: “Go [Childers] go ― much respect.”

Childers, who hails from Kentucky, has explained that despite the video’s heartfelt, LGBTQ-friendly message, “In Your Love” was not intended as a critique of rural America.

“I had people in my senior year who stayed away from all of that as much as possible,” he told NPR. “But it shaped me as a person. There are things you need to get rid of, but you don’t have to throw everything away. There are beautiful parts to this lifestyle.”
