Patrick Vieira believes Crystal Palace left-back Tyrick Mitchell should be called up for England later this month.
Areth Southgate is expected to name his Three Lions squad next week ahead of home games against Switzerland and Ivory Coast in late March.
With Chelsea defender Ben Chilwell injured, one left-hand player is vacant in the squad and Mitchell has been a paragon of consistency for the Eagles, reflected in the fact he has appeared in all 27 Premier League games this season was in the starting XI.
Asked about the academy graduate’s international prospects, Vieira said: “I don’t know but I think his name is or should be considered.
“It’s hard for me to say but for us he’s fine. He grows up and believes more in himself when he goes out onto the field.
“He knows and is still learning about his strengths and weaknesses and he obviously has some parts of the game that he needs to improve to have that international dimension.
“But if you look at the number of games he’s played and the consistent performances, is that a positive for him and his name can be there? I do not know. But if he plays well with us, there’s no reason why not.”
Palace team-mate Ebere Eze was on the verge of his first senior call-up last May when he suffered a serious hamstring injury in training.
While the former QPR playmaker was able to return and make his comeback against Aston Villa in November, since then his chances have been slim and he has failed to come off the bench for the midweek FA Cup win over Stoke.
Vieira added: “It’s just that he’s been out for quite a while. Of course he’s excited, scared and nervous because he wants to play, he’s someone who loves the game.
“It’s a difficult, challenging moment because he doesn’t play as much as he would like, but that’s part of his development as a player and his difficult time. I need to be sure that we give him the right support to get his ability and confidence back to start playing.
“It’s still a long season and we still have games and he will play, there’s no doubt about that.”
Eze has started just three games since his return in late 2020 but two have been in the FA Cup, making his lack of minutes on Tuesday a surprise.
Vieira stressed: “We have regular talks and he feels good to play. There is a competition and it must be patient.
“If someone struggles a bit in the position they can play in, there can be a change. It’s difficult for him at the moment, but that’s normal. I have to support him and I really believe he has the ability to be part of our team and to achieve what we are trying to do.”
