Tyrone faces another exit as Paul Donaghy walks away from the board

Reigning All-Ireland champion Tyrone has lost another member of his panel with reports that Paul Donaghy has left the squad.

he Belfast Telegraph reports that Dungannon man Donaghy left the panel this week and has returned to club training.

Donaghy is the seventh member of Tyrone’s extended board to step down for various reasons, with Tiernan McCann, Mark Bradley, Ronan O’Neill, Hugh Pat McGeary, Michael Cassidy and Lee Brennan all leaving the setup since last year’s run to stardom.

Donaghy was called up for his club last year after a brilliant season which saw Dungannon win the Tyrone title for the first time since 1956.

And he started brilliantly, performing on his league debut in the 10-0 loss to Donegal at Omagh. Later in the season, Donaghy made his championship debut against Cavan when the Breffni men were beaten but only beat late in the All Ireland Finals Mayo reappeared last year.

This season he managed a couple of league starts against Kildare and Donegal but saw just a handful of minutes against Dublin and didn’t play at all in the final two rounds.

It leaves Tyrone without a number of attacking opportunities as O’Neill, Bradley and Brennan are gone, while the experienced Mattie Donnelly suffers a hamstring injury ahead of Ulster SFC’s opener against Fermanagh on 16 April.

Earlier this month, Cathal McShane admitted the players who had left the squad would be missed.

“Some of the lads who have resigned would be very competitive Gaelic footballers,” McShane said. “You’ve done a lot for Tyrone over the past few years.

“Everyone has personal issues that they have to deal with in life. I have no doubt that if they had stayed in place this year we would have been in a much healthier position as the competition within the team had been serious.

“I’m not saying it’s not now – at Garvaghy on a Tuesday and Thursday night the lads push each other – but the experience some of these lads had would definitely have added to what we’re all about this year. “ Tyrone faces another exit as Paul Donaghy walks away from the board
