U2’s Bono and The Edge visited Ukraine today, performing in a bomb shelter in Kyiv at the invitation of President Volodymyr Zelensky.
The rock band shared the news in a post on Twitter today to show solidarity with the people of the war-torn country.
“President @ZelenskyyUa invited us to perform in Kyiv as a show of solidarity with the Ukrainian people and that’s why we came. – Bono and The Edge #StandWithUkraine.”
The Dubliners played in front of a small crowd of fans and members of the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
In videos shared online, the couple can be seen performing the Ben E King classic Stand By Me alongside Ukrainian soldiers in the subway station, which is now being used as a bomb shelter.
Bono also performed the band’s 1987 hit song With or Without You.
During a break, the 61-year-old praised Ukraine’s struggle for freedom.
“There is no place on earth we would rather be today than the great city of Kyiv,” he said.
“The people of Ukraine are not only fighting for their own freedom, they are fighting for all of us who love freedom.”
Separately, US First Lady Jill Biden paid an unannounced visit to western Ukraine on Sunday and held a surprise Mother’s Day meeting with the country’s First Lady Olena Zelenska.
Traveling under the guise of secrecy, Ms Biden became the latest high-profile American to enter Ukraine during her 10-week conflict with Russia.
“I wanted to come on Mother’s Day,” she said to Ms. Zelenska. “I felt it was important to show the Ukrainian people that this war must stop and that this war was brutal and that the people of the United States stand behind the people of Ukraine.”
The first lady traveled by vehicle to the town of Uzhhorod, about a 10-minute drive from a Slovak village that borders Ukraine. She spent about two hours in Ukraine.
The two met in a small classroom, sat across a table and chatted in front of reporters before meeting privately.
