U2 stars Bono and The Edge have shown their support for Ukraine by playing a gig from a bomb shelter in Kyiv.

The Irish rock band’s singer and lead guitarist was invited to play by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, according to a post on U2’s Twitter page.

They played to a small crowd of Ukrainian fans, including members of the besieged forces.

The band’s Twitter post states that Bono and The Edge performed to show their “solidarity” with Ukraine.

“President @ZelenskyyUa invited us to perform in Kyiv as a show of solidarity with the Ukrainian people and that’s why we came. – Bono and The Edge #StandWithUkraine.”

Videos shared on social media show the pair performing an acoustic version of their hit song With Or Without You.

The crowd can be heard singing along as the couple plays.

They also performed a version of the song Stand By Me featuring Ukrainian singer-turned-soldier Taras Topolia – replacing “Ukraine” with “me”.

Speaking to Sky News in Kyiv, Bono appeared to be referring to Vladimir Putin by saying the war in Ukraine was a “one man war”.

“I think it’s really a one-man war,” he said.

“I think that people in Russia… younger people know what’s going on.

“I trust that the younger people of Russia will oust this man from his office, which is so high and so low, right now.”
