Kamaru Usman will defend his welterweight title this weekend in a rematch with Leon Edwards as the pair made headlines at UFC 278 in Utah.
Usman (20-1) is on a 19-fight win streak, with Edwards (19-3, 1 no contest) already falling to the Nigerian in that run. In 2015, four years before becoming champion, Usman highlighted the Brit, who has impressively responded with a nine-fight win streak of his own to finally secure a title.
Usman, 35, last competed in November and scored a second win over Colby Covington to retain the belt for a fifth consecutive successful title defense. In fact, the Nigerian Nightmare not only retained the gold twice against Covington, but also twice against Jorge Masvidal. Usman has claimed to “lap” the opposition and a second win over Edwards would drive that point home.
Edwards, 30, last fought in June 2021, surviving a late scare to best Nate Diaz after dominating the fan favorite for the better part of five rounds. If the Jamaican-born, Birmingham-based fighter can defeat Usman here, he will become Britain’s second UFC champion.
